OSI Group is a US-based, customized meat processor that offer food solutions to retail and restaurant industries worldwide. The company is one of the largest food processing companies with a footprint that expands across the country in areas like North America, Western and Eastern Europe, and the Asian Pacific, with manufacturing factories globally.
The firm is located in Aurora Illinois and led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sheldon Lavin. OSI derived from humble origins as a family meat market in Oak Park Illinois in 1909. It then expanded into a wholesale meat mercantile as of 1917 and later in 1928, became known as Otto & Sons-named after the owner Otto Kolschowsky, a German immigrant. Otto & Sons were recognized for their premium quality meats.
Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s selected the meat shop as a supplier of ground beef for the lately created fast food restaurant. McDonald’s soon became a dominant customer for the established family meat shop. The advent of cryogenic food processing emerged and soon became a method that Otto & Sons instituted in their first high capacity meat plant located in the West Chicago area in 1973.
The new technology allowed the company to produce invariably fresh meat products with long shelf life. The family meat shop extended their customer base to local supermarkets and area restaurants. In 1975, they changed their name to OSI Industries, shortly after Mr. Kroc enlisted OSI to become his only meat supplier due to their long-term relationship and their high-quality ground beef patty products. McDonald’s was on the rise to success, as they grew-OSI flourished as well. OSI Industries changed their name once again, calling the outfit the OSI Group in 2004.
The large food processing company delivers goods such as breakfast sausages, bacon, hot dogs, raw and processed chicken, pizzas, frozen and cooked beef patties, and dough products. OSI Group recently expanded its operations by acquiring several companies in 2016. One of their major acquisitions was the purchase of Tyson Foods processing and storage facility located in Chicago. This move allows OSI Group to focus on accommodating the needs of their growing customer base.
