OSI Group Accommodates Their Growing Customer Base Worldwide

OSI Group is a US-based, customized meat processor that offer food solutions to retail and restaurant industries worldwide. The company is one of the largest food processing companies with a footprint that expands across the country in areas like North America, Western and Eastern Europe, and the Asian Pacific, with manufacturing factories globally.

The firm is located in Aurora Illinois and led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sheldon Lavin. OSI derived from humble origins as a family meat market in Oak Park Illinois in 1909. It then expanded into a wholesale meat mercantile as of 1917 and later in 1928, became known as Otto & Sons-named after the owner Otto Kolschowsky, a German immigrant. Otto & Sons were recognized for their premium quality meats.

Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s selected the meat shop as a supplier of ground beef for the lately created fast food restaurant. McDonald’s soon became a dominant customer for the established family meat shop. The advent of cryogenic food processing emerged and soon became a method that Otto & Sons instituted in their first high capacity meat plant located in the West Chicago area in 1973.

The new technology allowed the company to produce invariably fresh meat products with long shelf life. The family meat shop extended their customer base to local supermarkets and area restaurants. In 1975, they changed their name to OSI Industries, shortly after Mr. Kroc enlisted OSI to become his only meat supplier due to their long-term relationship and their high-quality ground beef patty products. McDonald’s was on the rise to success, as they grew-OSI flourished as well. OSI Industries changed their name once again, calling the outfit the OSI Group in 2004.

The large food processing company delivers goods such as breakfast sausages, bacon, hot dogs, raw and processed chicken, pizzas, frozen and cooked beef patties, and dough products. OSI Group recently expanded its operations by acquiring several companies in 2016. One of their major acquisitions was the purchase of Tyson Foods processing and storage facility located in Chicago. This move allows OSI Group to focus on accommodating the needs of their growing customer base.

David McDonald, Looks for Growth and Sustainability in New Acquisitions

Back in 1909, Otto Kolschowsky started a family-owned market and butcher shop in Chicago. In 1955, the company was tasked with providing beef for McDonald’s. Today, the original company is known as OSI Group and is a global supplier of food products to foodservice and retail brands. They have 65 facilities and over 20,000 employees in 17 companies.

At the helm of OSI Group is David McDonald, the company’s president and COO. For over 31 years McDonald has been guiding the company’s growth including increased food production and acquiring complementary food-based businesses throughout the world.

OSI Group Acquires Baho Foods and Subsidiaries:

One of the most recent acquisitions by OSI Group is the purchase of Dutch company Baho Foods and its subsidiaries. The company operates production facilities in Germany and the Netherlands and specializes in meat products, convenience foods and snack items distributed in 18 countries.

The purchase of Baho Foods was a strategic move by OSI Group “Adding Baho Food to our OSI Europe business gives OSI a broader presence in Europe,” stated McDonald. With Baho Food’s high European profile and their complementary product lines, McDonald said: “We will be well positioned to leverage the combined strengths to accelerate growth and realize goals.”

Sustainability at the Forefront:

OSI Group is always looking for innovative ways to develop their business in environmentally-friendly, sustainable ways. McDonald recently said, “As a global food provider to the world’s leading brands, sustainability has always been a priority at OSI.”

In January 2018, OSI Group’s Nicole Johnson-Hoffman, Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President was elected as the new President of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, to further the company’s dedication to using sustainable products globally and reduce the impact on the environment.

Unlike many large company’s OSI Group has always had a commitment to producing value-added products through sustainable means and give back to the local communities where they do business. With David McDonald leading the direction of the company, they are well-poised to continue their growth—a benefit to people worldwide and the environment.
